French Countryside Holiday Gîtes

Welcome to La Grande Martiniere gites in rural France! Our holiday gites are located in France in the heart of the peaceful French countryside.

Jane and Dave have renovated the 300 year old farmhouse and gites endeavouring at all times to show respect for the crafts and skills of the original build. The result is a peaceful welcoming haven in the French countryside for our gite guests.

For those who wish to explore, there is plenty to offer. From ancient châteaux and walled villages to caves and adventure parks, the region is rich in history and activities. Just over an hour away, you’ll find stunning sandy beaches perfect for a day by the sea. Mont Saint-Michel, one of France’s most iconic landmarks, is just over an hour’s drive. If you’re looking for a city escape, Paris is just over an hour away by train from Laval, making it an achievable day trip

Our gîtes are ideal for relaxation, unwinding, and embracing the slow pace of life. A heated outdoor swimming pool, complete with sunbeds and stunning views over the surrounding fields, provides the perfect spot to recharge. For those who need to stay connected, complimentary high-speed broadband is available across the site.

Our local village, Saint-Denis-de-Gastines, is nestled in the Mayenne department of the Pays de la Loire region—an idyllic rural area renowned for its exceptional walking and cycling routes. The scenic Mayenne River provides a beautiful pathway for exploring on foot or by bike, alongside hundreds of other trails winding through the countryside. The region is famous for its cider, making it the perfect excuse for a leisurely lunchtime tasting. Our peaceful location, surrounded by fields and wildlife, offers a true escape from the hustle and bustle. With minimal light pollution, clear nights reveal a breathtaking canopy of stars.

If you want peace and tranquillity Le Grande Martiniere is just the place, a piece of paradise in rural France.
Jane and David the hosts were amazing, so warm and friendly, always going the extra mile, nothing was too much trouble.
We stayed in The Bakery, a beautifully renovated building full of character.
We came home fully relaxed having spent a wonderful time enjoying swimming and lazing by the pool, reading, eating delicious food, and sleeping (I haven’t slept so well in ages!}
Everything at Le Grande Martiniere was just perfect.
Thank you so much Jane and David, can’t wait to come out and see you again x
Response from the owner:Thank you Jane! It was such a pleasure having you both to stay. It makes us very happy to know you were able to relax. Look forward to seeing you again soon!
Perfect place to stay with our family of 4 children. The Gites are great, they come with eveything we needed including BBQ and heated outdoor pool. Jane and David were great hosts with a wealth of local knowledge which allowed us to make the most of our stay there. 100% will recommend to friends and family.
Response from the owner:Thank you Ben. We loved having you all to stay! Thank you for your kind words!
What a wonderful little treasure hidden in the quiet beauty of the French countryside. Throw into the mix two fantastic and warm hosts, Jane and Dave, who really were spectacular. They were present when needed for impromptu fresh pizza making lessons or for the emergency pasta sauce request, and somehow invisible, making it feel like we were the only ones there. It was like having our very own house elfs leaving out crafting supplies for gregarious kids and honestly adding that little touch of magic to an already stunning break.

The Gîtes were clean, smart, homely, comfortable and the little extras by both Jane and Dave were all so unexpected they were little cherries on top. We arrived to a welcome basket of local treats from the Marché des Lices which was so thoughtful. The well thought out building conversations blended the old historical vibes with the contrast of modern convenience seamlessly. They were well equipped, the bathrooms modern and cooking options numerous. The multiple outdoor spaces were like little bubbles of choice, there were secluded and private areas and warm community congregation spaces, offering a large outdoor dining area with lighting to keep the conversations going well past nightfall. My favourite was the rocking sun chair overlooking the fields in the hidden sun trap behind the pool. Did I mention the heated pool? This was a must have that I didn't know I needed. It meant the kids were able to play endlessly even on the cloudy windy days. With pool floats, comfy deck lounges, and poolside fridge, both young and old were happy to just spend hours outside. Relaxation set to max!

The grounds were secure and fenced, enabling us to actually relax for a change whilst we let the children explore with freedom they wouldn't have experienced at a mainstream hotel. They adopted the resident animals as their own, played endless fetch with Nelson the border collie, collected the morning eggs for breakfast from the chickens and snuggled with the resident feline Casanova, Martin. This furry heartthrob would have been a stow away if not for airport security! They also explored the emerging gardens picking fresh tomatoes for salad making and herbs for dinner. Watching the teamwork as they picked pears from the tree to snack on was a delight. It was lovely to not feel the need to lower the kids excited max volume level, being so secluded they experienced joy without being shushed!

A hire car is a must, the secluded location was easy to find but with that comes the need of independent travel options. The Gîtes are an hour's drive from the small Rennes airport and a similar drive to beaches. With many closer historical French landmarks to explore, and larger towns we found everything close by we needed.

The kids are already asking to go back, just for Jane and Dave, the Gîtes and Martin the cat, not because they want to see more of France! That is the best seal of approval in my mind.

La Grande Martinière Gîtes are on our return to list and should be on yours too!
Response from the owner:Aliina, thank you for this really lovely review. We are so pleased you were able to relax and delighted the children enjoyed themselves. It was so lovely to hear them exploring and playing games. The animals are all missing you. I think Nelson met his match with the boys and four year old twins. He's been putting his paws up for the last few hours 😂. Martin sends his love and is very cross at the lack of kitty treats since you left! We would love to see you here again! Jane and Dave
Just got back from 10 fantastic days staying at David and Janes gites. Really lovely stay, gites are perfectly setup for relaxing and getting away from it all holidaying. Everything from the welcome pack, the well equiped kitchens and private outdoor eating area
Response from the owner:Thank you for the kind review. It was an absolute pleasure to have you as guests and we're delighted you had a good time. Hope to see you again soon!
What a beatiful place set in the heart of the French countryside. The Gites are tastfully decorated and provide everything you could need for a relaxing break. The hosts Dave and Jane are very knowledgable about the area and go above and beyond to ensure you maximise your Holiday.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Richard, for your kind review. It was a pleasure hosting you both.
We recently had the pleasure of staying at La Grande Martinière Gîtes. This is the idylic escape from all the noise of life, chickens wandering the grounds and beautifully designed Gîtes. Set in the beautiful french countryside, not too far to explore some amazing spots (Laval, Mont-Saint-Michel) but the perfect rural retreat with all the luxuries you could wish for.
Spending a day relaxing by the pool, on the comfy sunloungers between taking dips in the beautiful refreshing water, with just the sounds of the wildlife was just pure bliss and just what the doctor ordered.

David & Jane were so accomodating and nothing was too much trouble for them, they are so lovely and helpful. The outdoor courtyard with the outdoor cooking facilities is perfect for alfresco evenings.

We already cannot wait to go back. You won't regret booking to stay here.
Response from the owner:Thank you Jen, it was a pleasure hosting you!
We're just had a marvellous holiday at La Grande Martiniere gites! Couldn't recommend the place more highly. The gites are beautifully renovated farm buildings with real character but full of light and well equipped. We quickly felt fully at home. Beds very comfortable. Showers perfect. The out door spaces are thoughtfully arranged and planted giving privacy and scent from the flowers. Lovely swimming pool with shade beside it. Such a calm and restful setting surrounded by fields and trees.
The electric car charger on site worked really well and there are fast chargers in Ernee.
We had lots of wonderful days out. Great morning with the bikes. The roads are very good and quiet. We enjoyed castles and medieval streets in the local towns and had a fabulous day at Mont St Michael.
Our hosts Jane and Dave couldn't have been more kind, attentive and generous. Wish we could have stayed longer.
Toni

What a great place to spend time in rural France! There's a lovely little village nearby, with the towns of Ernee & Laval not far away. Plenty of shopping options.

Highly recommended!

A delightful stay with Dave and Jane. Clearly a lot of thought has gone into their tastefully decorated and kitted out Gites. What they’ve achieved in their renovations is amazing.
